“With Porsche Consulting on board, we could handle the big contract”
Stuttgart-based Nimbus is a leading innovator in the field of LED technology and specialty lighting. Its key to success consists of an impressive combination of purist design and technical sophistication. Its customized lighting solutions are made at the company’s own workshop to meet the highest standards of quality. Production of these high-grade LED lamps is extremely time-intensive.
In 2008 Nimbus got a clear idea of how critical a factor time is when Unilever, the world’s largest consumer goods group, wanted to install 3,500 Nimbus lights at its imposing German headquarters in Hamburg’s HafenCity in just one and a half months. A big – but also risky – contract for Nimbus. “The volume of the order might have been too much for us to handle,” says CEO Dietrich Brennenstuhl in hindsight. “We first had to learn how to reorganize ourselves, so we asked Porsche Consulting for support.” With takt-based manufacturing areas and tightly structured processes, the company succeeded in revving up production to 100 lights a day. “Our company changed completely over this period,” says Brennenstuhl, who is an architect by training. In the meantime all the other departments at Nimbus such as development, sales, and logistics have also been oriented to the operational excellence that began in the production department.
