Germany’s rail system is facing a major transformation: to unlock its full potential, a high-performance, seamlessly digitalized infrastructure is required for both passenger and freight transport – one that delivers greater reliability and fewer delays.
The focus is on using existing tracks more efficiently. Expanding modern control and safety technologies such as the European Train Control System (ETCS) is expected to improve punctuality, safety, and network capacity. At the same time, passenger transport demands more customer-centric solutions, such as simple digital booking, attractive timetables, and a high-quality onboard experience.
Rail industry players and operators are driving this transformation jointly, for example through multi-billion-euro investments in new high-speed trains. In Porsche Consulting Magazine, rail experts André Schwämmlein (Flix), Isabel Vollers (Hitachi Rail), Dr. Heike van Hoorn (Deutsches Verkehrsforum, DVF), Marc Ludwig (Siemens Mobility), and Marc Zacherl (Porsche Consulting) share their perspectives on how to make this transition a success.
